What are cookies?

Cookies are short strings of text that are sent to your browser and stored on your computer (or any other device used for navigation, such as smartphones and tablets) every time you visit a website or use a social network. Cookies can contain different data. For example, the name of the server they come from, a numeric identifier, etc. Cookies can remain in the system for the duration of a session (that is, until you close down your browser) or for longer periods, and may contain a unique identifier. Only the website managers and those who install website management systems on the same sites can access cookies that are stored on the browser of each user.

 What is their purpose?

Some cookies are used to perform authentication processes, track sessions and remember preferences or specific information about users who log on to a web page. These cookies, so-called technical, are often useful, because they can make navigation faster, for instance by intervening to facilitate certain procedures when making purchases online, when users authenticate themselves to access restricted areas, or when a website automatically recognizes the language that you use regularly.

Other cookies may instead be used to track and profile users while browsing, to study their movements and habits of consultation or consumption (what they buy, what they read, etc.). They can also be used to send targeted advertising (Behavioural Advertising). This is what we call profiling.

A particular type of cookies, called analytics, are used by the website operators to gather aggregate information about the number of users and how they visit the site, as well as what keywords they used to reach the site, and then draw general statistics about the service and its use. The holder of the data may use the information to compile reports and improve the site. These can be either technical or profiling cookies, depending on the data they collect.
